In June 2009, nearly a hundred activists squatted a piece of derelict land at Kew Bridge in southwest London to create an eco-village community based entirely on sustainable technology and construction techniques.

There are normally about 15 or 20 people living here and we like doing things like building, cooking, gardening and making music around the fire. We are all about learning, using it as a tool to empower our own ability to live effectively now and for the future; we learn about sustainability, permaculture, food, and social issues.”

The eco village is now threatened by the landowners who after years of keeping this area as a wasteland now have decided to build. They want to have the squatters evicted, and by going through the legal processes they probably will succeed. So as many radical and alternative projects before, this too seems to end quite soon. What is the point then, the critics might say. Why engage in a project, investing time and effort, not to mention actually living an every day life as an active part of a protest/demonstration if it is inevitable going to be demolished and put to an end? Why is this form of activism so important? Because it shows us what is possible! It might be extreme and ”way out there” for some, but the idea, the potential, the challenging of our conceptions of what we know as housing, everyday life and organizing of community is the point of it all.

I find places like this to be very inspiring, both for the mind and the soul. One of the aspects that I find very appealing is the high level of freedom of expression, both idealist and artistic. I love all the small visual details, made out of hope, dreams, joy and enthusiasm, and I have tried to capture some of them for you to see with the pictures in this entry. It was a warm, sunny, and beautiful day for visiting the eco village, and I also used the opportunity to take pictures for the pattern I have published here on the blog today. This is a pattern I’ve been fiddling with for quite a while now, trying to get it exactly right. I wanted a stylish head wrap, wide enough to keep my hair in place and my ears warm, without being bulky and looking oversized. The ”I got hair, Baby!” head wrap is designed with the beginning knitter in mind. It is meant to take you to the next level beyond the simple purl and knit stitches, introducing increasing and decreasing techniques. I hope some of you will enjoy it, happy knitting!
