Especially when it comes to making sure that the colours comes out accurate. If you are very into photography you might have solved this issue by investing in an expensive camera that lets you manually adjust exposure and white balance, if not using a light tent or light box can be a good solution. The problem is that these are quite expensive too. Ages ago I read a very good tutorial on a photographing web site on how to make a light box your self, I made one, and were pretty pleased with how my pictures came out after using it. Of course the light box was not one of the things we prioritized bringing with us when we moved, so now when I received new yarns for my web shop and needed to take good pictures of them, I had to make a new one. Since I don’t remember the web site where I found the original tutorial I decided to make a tutorial my self, hoping that this can be useful to some of you.

To make your own light box you need a box. I prefer to use one that is as square as possible. It can be any size; the one I’m using here is quite small but will work fine when photographing small objects, like a ball of yarn. You also need measuring tape or a ruler, something to mark with like a pencil, paper knife and scissors, white fabric (I used plain cotton) and something to attach the fabric with like Gaffer tape, and finally you need glue and white card (I used a glue stick and two sheets of A1 170g). The most important part of the light box is the lights, and I’ll come back to that at the end of this tutorial.

Measure in 2” from the side of the box marking multiple points around the edge. Connect these points with your ruler, and you should now have an even and centred 2” frame. Repeat on all sides, leaving the top and bottom of the box alone.

Cut out the boxes you have drawn, then cut off the flaps on the top leaving the bottom intact.

Now measure and draw 2” strips on your white card, you’ll need 16 strips, cut them out with your scissors.

Fold the excess card over the top edge and secure with tape. Make sure there are no creases or folds on the card, as this will show up in your pictures.

It looks like homemade, it IS homemade, but works like wonder! As I mentioned earlier the most important part of the box is the lighting, and what I’m showing you here for illustration really isn’t optimal, still I wanted to show you the box in action. Ideally you would light the top, a desk work lamp would do, and only use side lighting to adjust shadows and such. You would also use full spectrum light bulbs that cast white light instead of the yellow light that standard light bulbs will cast. I didn’t have any of these alternatives at hand when making the box, but still, as you can see …

… the result is still pretty neat, isn’t it?

… resultatet ser slettes ikke verst ut, ikke sant?

Photographing yarn, or actually any object, can be a tricky thing.
